A few months before the elections and amid the burgeoning border crisis, mainstream media has memory holed its popular use of the moniker “border czar” to refer to Democratic presidential nominee and incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris.
These media outlets are doing their best to make sure the American public does not remember that President Joe Biden had put Harris in charge of the southern border. However, savvy users on X were quick to spot news outlets using the label “border czar” on Harris. In fact, Axios used the label to describe Harris on at least three occasions in 2021, when Biden first gave her special responsibility for illegal immigration.
In one April 2021 article, the news agency wrote: “The number of unaccompanied minors crossing the border has reached crisis levels. Harris, appointed by Biden as border czar, said she would be looking at the ‘root causes’ that drive migration.” Other media outlets, including the BBC, have also used the moniker in their articles.
Now Axios is denying Harris’s role in immigration and border security policy as the publication posted an editor’s note stating: “This article has been updated and clarified to note that Axios was among the news outlets that incorrectly labeled Harris a ‘border czar’ back in 2021.”
What could have been a medal on her chest if it was resolved properly, the migration issue has turned into one of Harris’s first campaign headaches. In the past few days, former President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans have been calling her out for being a failure when it comes to resolving the burgeoning migrant crisis.
“Harris was appointed ‘border czar’ in March of 2021, and since that time, millions and millions of illegal aliens have invaded our country and countless Americans have been killed by migrant crime because of her willful demolition of American borders and laws,” Trump told reporters on a call last week.
“With Harris at the helm, the Biden-Harris administration made good on their promise to systematically dismantle President Donald Trump’s secure border policies,” Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) said during the House Rules Committee hearing, which focused on an emergency resolution addressing the “failures of the border czar position and its negative impact on our fellow citizens across the country.”
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) also introduced a resolution condemning the administration and Harris for failing to secure the United States’ border.
Despite Harris’ efforts, some seven million migrants have been arrested illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border under Biden, according to government data. Her supporters were quick to defend her “failed efforts.”
“She was given a very hard, difficult, convoluted portfolio,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), a Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee and an architect of a bipartisan border security bill introduced earlier this year.
“She assumed the role that Vice President Biden had during the Obama administration, which is diplomacy with Central America,” former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told Fox News on Tuesday. “She is not the border czar.” (Related: TRUTH about Kamala Harris: She was, in fact, appointed by Biden to be America’s open borders czar.)
Harris reportedly rebuked Biden for saying she was in charge of immigration at a Congressional Black Caucus meeting, according to a book by New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns, insisting she was only responsible for the “Northern Triangle” of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. But she still failed to control immigration from these three countries.
The book says she frequently clashed with Biden and his “white inner circle,” which found her “fixation on real and perceived snubs… tedious.” The two now claim they love each other.
Meanwhile, she hit back at Trump and the Republicans during a campaign rally in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 30. She boasted about her background as California state attorney general to contrast herself against Trump, highlighting the pressure the former president put on his GOP Senate allies earlier this year to kill any border legislation that wasn’t “perfect.”
“He tanked the bipartisan deal because he thought it would help him win an election, which goes to show Donald Trump does not care about border security. He only cares about himself,” Harris said, promising to bring the bipartisan border bill back and sign it into law if elected president.
The vice president’s comments follow the release of a new ad from Trump’s campaign running across several key battleground states focused on Harris’ record on immigration.
“This is America’s border czar – and she’s failed us,” one of the new ads indicated.
The Harris campaign countered by releasing a 50-second campaign video. “Kamala Harris supports increasing the number of Border Patrol agents. Donald Trump blocked a bill to increase the number of Border Patrol agents,” the video stated.
