Two Wisconsin judges are sparking outrage after defying federal law by obstructing the arrest of illegal aliens, casting themselves as heroes while putting public safety at risk. Sawyer County Circuit Judge Monica Isham and Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan have drawn sharp criticism for shielding alleged criminals from federal authorities, comparing U.S. immigration detention facilities to “concentration camps” and vowing to resist legal consequences. Their actions have ignited a broader debate over judicial overreach and the erosion of the rule of law.
Judge Monica Isham of Sawyer County made headlines after stating she refuses to allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to remove any illegal aliens from her courtroom, even if it means getting arrested or losing her job.
In an email to Wisconsin’s judiciary, Isham declared, “I have no intention of allowing anyone to be taken out of my courtroom by ICE and sent to a concentration camp.” The judge, who claims to be the first Native American elected to her county’s benchm argued that recent racial hostility in her courtroom justifies her lawlessness, stating she’s endured “racial attacks” including being called an “immigrant” and having a juror claim she couldn’t fairly judge a person of color.
Her rhetoric, however, has drawn condemnation. Wisconsin Rep. Tom Tiffany demanded she resign or be removed from the bench, while Sen. Mike Lee questioned her commitment to the law. Federal authorities arrested Dugan last week for allegedly directing officers away from an illegal immigrant wanted by ICE, exposing a pattern of judicial rebellion against federal authority.
The crisis deepened as Isham warned she might raise bail for defendants to help them evade ICE, a move Wisconsin legal experts called unconstitutional.
At the center of this turmoil is Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan, who was arrested by the FBI for allegedly obstructing ICE’s arrest of Mexican national Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an illegal alien with a history of violent crimes. On April 18, Dugan allegedly directed Flores-Ruiz and his attorney through a restricted courtroom door to avoid waiting federal agents. The judge, who helped migrants as director of Catholic Charities, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
FBI Director Kash Patel condemned her actions, stating Dugan “intentionally misdirected federal agents” to shield a criminal who had been deported once already.
Isham’s defense of Dugan ignores the broader societal harm. Flores-Ruiz is accused of battering two people during a street fight, yet judges like Dugan seem more concerned with shielding lawbreakers than protecting communities.
Her claims of racial bias in her courtroom do not justify her extra-legal politics. “If this costs me my job or gets me arrested then at least I know I did the right thing,” Isham concluded in her email in a statement revealing her priorities. By framing civil disobedience as a moral stance, these judges manufacture a false equivalency between enforcing the law and collaborating with illegal criminals.
The backlash has been swift. The New York Post called Isham a “lefty Wisconsin jurist” joining a growing cadre of judges sabotaging federal immigration efforts. Wisconsin’s Judicial District 10 faces immense pressure to confront this wave of insubordination.
The real victims of this rebellion are American taxpayers, who foot the bill for judges’ rogue agendas. Meanwhile, Isham and Dugan enjoy taxpayer-funded salaries while partnering with ideological allies like ACLU lawyers to challenge lawful immigration processes.
Monica Isham’s closing line, “Enough is enough. I no longer feel protected or respected as a Judge in this administration”, exposes a deeper reality: these judges see themselves not as public servants but as radical crusaders above the law.
