A wave of new interest in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has emerged in the wake of President Donald J. Trump’s recently passed immigration legislation, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
According to ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons, the agency has received nearly 78,000 new applications since the passage of the bill. “Big Beautiful Bill,” signed into law last July, dramatically increases funding for ICE, particularly targeting expanded enforcement, mass deportations and personnel recruitment. Key provisions include hiring bonuses of up to $50,000, streamlined application pathways for veterans and expanded authority for ICE agents in the field. Lyons said in an interview with Fox News: “We have almost 78,000 applicants since we opened up, and we’re going through, we’re finding those people that really want to serve the country and really be in law enforcement. I think it’s a great way to recruit now.
“We’re taking back our rehired annuitants, people that left the job early because they weren’t allowed to do their law enforcement mission. But we have so many people that are interested now in working with ICE because now they’re seeing under Secretary Noem’s leadership, we have a viable law enforcement partner in the community.
“You are actually out there making a difference. So we’re really ecstatic about seeing the increase in new recruits that are applying. And you know, so are most of these people, you said some of them are coming back into the force.”
The influx of applications is coming from a diverse pool, including recent military veterans, law enforcement officers from state and local departments and civilians seeking new careers in federal enforcement.
Training programs for new recruits range from four to six months, depending on the chosen path, either as a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent or a deportation officer with Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).
The sharp rise in ICE applications comes just a week after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) kicked off its “Defend the Homeland” recruitment campaign.
The campaign, which seeks to recruit thousands of new ICE agents, offers an aggressive incentives package, including up to $50,000 in signing bonuses, student loan repayment and forgiveness programs, 25 percent Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) for HSI special agents, uncontrollable overtime pay for ERO officers and enhanced federal retirement benefits.
It has been rolled out across college campuses, military bases, police departments and job fairs in major cities nationwide. Promotional materials include patriotic-themed posters, digital ads and testimonials from current ICE agents.
“Your country is calling you to serve at ICE. In the wake of the Biden administration’s failed immigration policies, your country needs dedicated men and women of ICE to get the worst of the worst criminals out of our country,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “This is a defining moment in our nation’s history. Your skills, your experience and your courage have never been more essential. Together, we must defend the homeland.”
